Barrie Colts forward Tyson Foerster has been named to Team Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Showcase. Foerster’s selection to the National Junior Team Summer Showcase will mark his first opportunity to attend a Hockey Canada Program of Excellence team event. The camp, which is normally held in Calgary, Alta., will be held virtually this year from July 27-31. The Summer Showcase is the first team event on the way to selecting Team Canada’s roster for the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship to be held in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta. from December 26, 2020 to January 5, 2021.
“I’m obviously very excited,” said Foerster. “It’s my first time being selected to a Team Canada event. It’s going to be a tough team to crack, so I think I just need to go in and work my hardest like I’ve been doing for the last couple of years. I’m really honoured and excited about the opportunity.”
Foerster had a breakout year with the Colts during the 2019-20 season where he led the team in goals (36), assists (44) and points (80) in 62 games. Foerster also led the Ontario Hockey League in power play goals with 18.
The Alliston, Ont. native’s selection comes after he gained national attention earlier this year when he recorded two goals and an assist in a three-point game for Team White at the Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Hamilton, Ont. on January 16. Foerster’s excellent sophomore season also caught the attention of National Hockey League scouts. He jumped from 41st among North American Skaters on NHL Central Scouting’s 2020 Draft Prospect Midterm Rankings to a final rank of 21st at season’s end ahead of the upcoming 2020 NHL Draft.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Tyson to compete for a spot among the elite 18 and 19 year-olds in major junior hockey,” said Barrie Colts General Manager and Head Scout, Jason Ford. “His game has evolved in so many ways and this past season he was one of the premiere offensive 17 year-olds in the entire OHL. He has improved immensely over the past two seasons and it is nice to see his hard work paying off. Congratulations to him in this first step towards making the National Junior Team.”
Foerster joined the Colts for the 2018-19 season after he was selected in the third round, 55th overall in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. In his rookie campaign, he posted 23 points in 64 games before his offensive explosion this past season resulted in an 80-point campaign.
The entire Barrie Colts organization would like to congratulate Tyson Foerster on his selection to Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Showcase.
