Colts’ Hawerchuk earns 300th career win

Ontario Hockey League

Dale Hawerchuk put together a great NHL career on the ice, now the Hockey Hall of Fame inductee is climbing the OHL’s all-time coaching wins list.

Hawerchuk was behind the bench for his 300th career victory on Saturday as rookie netminder Jet Greaves backstopped the Barrie Colts past the Mississauga Steelheads 3-1, turning aside 50 shots for the second straight night.

Hawerchuk becomes the 19th member of the OHL’s 300-win club, recently surpassing former Windsor Spitfires coaches Tom Webster (295) and Bob Boughner (282) on the league’s all-time list.

Barrie currently sits four points back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, owning a 21-25-2-1 record with 19 games remaining on the regular season schedule.

Now in his ninth season behind the bench, Hawerchuk owns a career coaching record of 300-256-21-16 over 593 career regular season contests for a winning percentage of .537. He has steered the Colts to four Central Division titles (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018) and one Eastern Conference crown (2013) while contributing to the development of notable graduates in Aaron Ekblad (Florida Panthers), Mark Scheifele (Winnipeg Jets), Tanner Pearson (Los Angeles Kings) and Kevin Labanc (San Jose Sharks).

The winningest coach in Colts history, Hawerchuk’s tenure in Barrie follows a decorated playing career that spanned 16 NHL seasons spent with Winnipeg, Buffalo, St. Louis and Philadelphia. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001, he remains the Winnipeg Jets’ all-time leading scorer, was a five-time NHL All-Star and was the first player in NHL history to appear in 1000 games before his 31st birthday.
