Round 1 of the 2021 NHL Draft was held on Friday, July 23rd, with rounds 2-7 following on Saturday, July 24th.

Barrie’s superstar defenceman, Brandt Clarke, ranked #7 on the NHL Central Scouting Draft Rankings for North American Skaters. After being drafted by Barrie in round 1, 4th overall, in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection, Clarke joined the Colts during the shortened 2019/2020 season. During his introductory season, Brandt put up an impressive 38 total points (6 goals, 32 assists) in only 57 games played.

“Brandt is a player that has worked extremely hard over the past two seasons to get his game to the level of a top NHL prospect. We are very proud of Brandt and all that he has accomplished in his hockey career to this point,” commented Colts President, Howie Campbell.

During the Covid-19 affected 2020/2021 season, Brandt Clarke was invited to join Team Canada on the U18 roster. In his first appearance in Texas, Brandt led Team Canada with 4 points in their 12-1 win over Sweden. Throughout the tournament, Clarke tallied up a point per game (2 goals, 3 assists) in 5 games played and went on to win GOLD in the finals.

The Barrie Colts organization would like to congratulate Brandt Clarke who was selected in the 1st round, 8th overall to the Los Angeles Kings.

With Brandt Clarke’s selection by the Kings, the Barrie Colts have the CHL’s longest active streak of four consecutive years producing a first round pick. Brandt Clarke adds to the impressive streak of Tyson Foerster, Ryan Suzuki and Andrei Svechnikov.

Among three additional Colts that were ranked on the NHL Central Scouting list was Ethan Cardwell at #159. Cardwell was drafted by the Saginaw Spirit in round 2, 33rd overall, in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. Upon being traded to Barrie with Punnett at the trade deadline during the 2019/2020 season, Cardwell tallied up a point per game (11 goals, 15 assists) in 26 games played. Without return to play for the OHL during the 2020/2021 season, Cardwell played 18 games for the Surahammars IF of Sweden in the HockeyEttan where he accrued an impressive 27 total points (9 goals, 18 assists).

“We are very proud of Ethan and his commitment to his development path. After not being selected last year, he went to great lengths to continue his development and we are happy to see him rewarded for that. Ethan will be a big piece to the puzzle for us this coming season,” said Howie Campbell.

The Barrie Colts organization would like to congratulate Ethan Cardwell who was selected in the 4th round, 121st overall to the San Jose Sharks.

The entire Barrie Colts organization would like to extend congratulations to our two recent players who were selected in the 2021 NHL Draft, Brandt Clarke and Ethan Cardwell. We are pleased to add their names to the long list of Barrie Colts players that have been drafted to the NHL throughout the history of our franchise.
