The Barrie Colts reached a milestone today of 34,000 meals that have been prepared and donated to those in need.
When COVID-19 isolation began, many local organizations were faced with new challenges in feeding the people they normally served. When some people had to be moved from shelters into hotels due to isolation and safety issues, feeding them each day became a challenge as their usual methods were unable to be used and volunteers faced new challenges in helping prepare meals.
“When we learned of the issues and that many people were in a very difficult position, our staff came up with the idea of preparing meals in our kitchen at the Horsepower Grill and having the meals delivered each day. Our Food & Beverage Manager, Sean Kehoe, has done an incredible job with this program. And it’s thanks to our fans that we have been able to do this. For anyone that wants to know where the money from our 50/50 ticket sales go, this is one example. All of the people who bought 50/50 tickets at our games are the ones who have allowed us to do this. We have been able to use those funds to purchase the food required to make these meals. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all of our fans. It’s because of you that we can do things like this and the many other charitable donations we make each year. We are also getting generous donations of food from No Frills, one of our valued sponsors, as well as Zehrs Supermarkets. In addition, Rockbrune Movers and AMJ Campbell have donated boxes to allow us to deliver the meals”, said Howie Campbell, President of The Barrie Colts.
The meals have been donated to the Barrie Food Bank, David Busby Street Centre, Salvation Army Barrie Bayside Mission Centre, Women & Children’s Shelter (Barrie), Youth Haven and Hospice Simcoe.
The Barrie Colts Community Fund supports various charities in the community. We always strive to support the community that supports us.
The Barrie Colts will be continuing on with the program for as long as possible.
