Barrie Colts defenceman Alex Lepkowski was selected in the fifth round of the NHL Entry Draft in St. Paul, Minnesota Saturday afternoon.  For the fourth consecutive year a pair of Colts have been selected at the NHL Draft, as Lepkwoski joins Mark Scheifele who was picked seventh overall by Winnipeg Friday night.  Past Picks.

Lepkowski, much like Scheifele, was acquired by the Colts from the Saginaw Spirit.  He played in just 15 games for Barrie this season, coming over with Matt Ashman and a pair of picks for former captain Dalton Prout.

The 6’4″ native of West Seneca, New York was drafted by his home-town team the Buffalo Sabres in the 5th round, 137th overall.  

Lepkowski played in 53 games in his rookie season with the Spirit, racking up 39 penalty minutes and one assist.  Last season he combined for six assists in 39 games played with 75 penalty minutes. 

A record 11 players from the Ontario Hockey League were selected in the first round of the Draft, including Scheifele and former Colt Ryan Strome.  Draft Results.
