Training Camp Results Day 1

Barrie, ON – We kicked off our 2017-18 Barrie Colts Training camp today with some off-ice training.

All players attended The Training Room for the off-ice training where they took part in speed, endurance, strength and agility drills.  The day portion was finished off with a 2 km run just outside the BMC.

Then came the night cap of day 1 where we saw a couple of games played.

In the first game it was Team White vs. Team Navy.

Team White vs. Team Navy

In the early stages of this one it was the two new Russians that made their mark.  Scoring the first goal of training camp was Alexei Lipanov with an assist coming from fellow Russian Andrei Svechnikov along with Kade Landry.

The two weren’t done there as they help setup Team White’s 2nd goal as David Sherman slid one home easily, giving White the 2-0 lead.

In the second half it was Navy putting the foot down, scoring two quick ones.  First off it was Kyle Heitzner slapping one between the legs of Catalin Morin. Justin Murray picked up the lone assist on the goal. Right after that, Payton Schaly’s slapshot beat Morin glove hand, tying things at two. Lucas Chiodo recorded the only assist.

Heitzner would find the board once again giving Navy their first lead of the game.

Svechnikov would get his first of the game as he tied things up at three.  Landry and Ben Hawerchuk helped setup the tying goal.

Just over thirty seconds into overtime it was Jason Willms who took a pass from Payton Schaly and finished the game by putting one home. Chiodo was credited with the second assist.

Team Red vs. Team Gold

Team Red featured our #1 overall selection in the OHL Priority Selection draft, Ryan Suzuki.  He was playing on Team Red, and showed off his talents early.  Suzuki, was able to make room for himself a couple times in the slot creating great scoring opportunities but wasn’t able to find the back of the net.

Shortly after that it was Kirill Nizhnikov sprung on a breakaway and he made no mistake sliding it between the pads of Kai Edmonds to open the scoring in the game.

Gold would extend their lead shortly after.  Spencer Cosway was fed a pass by Pringle and he snapped one from the point that found its way through the crowd of bodies and into the back of the net.

It wasn’t until the second half of the game where a weird bounced fell right onto the stick of Jaden Peca in the slot and he blasted it past Howe to extend the Gold lead. Sam Rhodes picked up an assist on the play.

Moments later Giordano Finoro showed off the moves with a sweet move around the defensemen before powering it past Pierce Charleson, putting Team Red on the board. Supryka recorded an assist on Reds opening goal of the game.

Thomas Hernandez would find the board for Red after receiving a nice pass from Christian Taylor cutting the lead to just one for Team Gold.

That was as close as Red would get as Gold takes it 3-2.

Scrimmages start back up tomorrow morning at 9:30am.
