Top pick Givani Smith commits to Colts

Barrie, ON – Barrie Colts General Manager Jason Ford announced today that forward Givani Smith has committed to the team and has signed an Ontario Hockey League standard player agreement.

The Colts selected the Toronto, Ontario native in the 1st round, 13th overall in the 2014 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection draft.

This past May, Smith competed at the 2014 OHL Gold Cup in Kitchener for Team GTHL Red where he notched three goals and two assists in five games played.

“Givani is a heart and soul player that plays a hard brand of physical hockey. He competes game in and game out, has very good touch with the puck and can make skilled plays, said Colts General Manager Jason Ford.

The 6’1”, 192lbs left-winger is the younger brother of London Knights forward Gemel Smith who recently signed an entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars who selected him in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft.

“He has an OHL shot, skates well and will get better over time due to his tremendous work ethic. Givani is the type of kid that takes challenges head on, and has always been a leader among his teammates at his age group,” added Ford.

Most recently Smith was named one of 96 skaters who have been invited to attend Canada’s national under-17 development camp, July 29 to Aug. 4 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.

Barrie Colts training camp opens Monday August 25th, 2014 at the Barrie Molson Centre.
