The Barrie Colts skated into Kingston to kick off their season against the Frontenacs for the second straight season and came out on top once again. A big 2-1 win gets the Colts off on the right foot to start the year.
After a very good first period finished scoreless the Colts brought the same effort into the 2nd.
The boys in blue began the 2nd period just like they finished the first, STRONG. The offense was relentless and at some points it looked like they weren’t going to be able to buy a goal. With less than 5 minutes to go in the period the Colts finally solved Kingston’s Mario Peccia, Anthony Stefano nets Barrie’s first goal of the season. Newly named Captain Cordell James, along with Ben Hawerchuk picked up assists on Stefano’s first of the season.
The third started off with a Barrie penalty, and Kingston wasted no time tying the game. Just over 2 minutes into the period, Jason Robertson netted the Fronts first goal of the season.
The game would stay tied until Ben Hawerchuk put the Colts back in front with 5:58 to go in the game. Colts rookie centre Curtis Douglas picked up his first career OHL point with an assist on the goal along with Matt Brassard.
David Ovsjannikov and the Colts were able to shut things down the rest of the way and picked up a 2-1 win to start the season, despite getting outshot by the Fronts 14-4 in the final frame .
Barrie Colts first round pick Tyler Tucker made his OHL debut along with 7 other rookies including Joey Keane, Jaden Peca, Jason Wilms, Curtis Douglas, Kyle Heitzer, Tom Hedberg and Kirill Nizhnikov.
Colts are back in action Sunday afternoon as they head into the nations capital to take on the Ottawa 67s. Puck drops at 2pm.
