The Barrie Colts wrapped up three games in three nights on Saturday when they visited the Saginaw Spirit at the Dow Event Center. This game would not be decided until the later stages, as both teams were strong on the defensive end. The Spirit would eventually come out on top 4-1 in their annual Pink out game in front of 3720.

The Saginaw Spirit were waiting for the Colts to arrive as they had not been in action since last Saturday October 19th and were hoping to take advantage of a tired Barrie team. That was not the case as the Colts and Spirit came out hard in an entertaining first period.

The opening twenty minutes would end scoreless, as goaltenders Mackenzie Blackwood and Jake Paterson were sharp right from the drop of the puck. Blackwood most notably stole a sure goal from Saginaw with a sliding pad save late in the first period. The Spirit held the edge in shots 12-9.

With the game still without it’s first goal midway through the second period Barrie would open the scoring on the power play after Terry Trafford went to the box for interference. Tyson Fawcett blasted a slap shot off the cross bar and in from the top of the circle for his fourth goal of the season. Captain Aaron Ekblad and Mitchell Theoret picked up the assists.

The Spirit would tie things up at 14:39 of the second period when Justin Kea potted home a rebound past a sprawling Blackwood. Blackwood made a nice stretch pad save but Kea managed to get a stick on the rebound to chip it up and into the net. The Spirit fired a total of 32 shots to Barrie’s 19 after forty minutes.

The final period did not start the way the Colts would of hoped as Saginaw buried two quick goals just six seconds apart. The first goal came at 1:51 on a jammed play in front of the Barrie crease much to the disbelief of the Colts bench. Blackwood made multiple saves before defenceman Justin Sefton found the loose puck to score right on the doorstep. Kristoff Kontos and Eric Locke were credited with assists.

Off the centre ice face-off Spirit forward Dylan Sadowy broke down the wing before snapping home a nice shot short side over the blocker arm of Mackenzie Blackwood. The Colts would the call a time out to try and settle things down as eighteen minutes remained in the game.

But at 12:07 former Mississauga Steelhead Kristoff Kontos sealed the victory for the Spirit as he netted his fifth goal of the season for the 4-1 lead.

Despite the scoreboard this hockey game was much closer due to the goaltending duo between Paterson and Blackwood. Blackwood faced a lot of rubber and made 43 saves on the night.

The Barrie Colts (6-7-0-1) will head out on the road again Wednesday October 30th to face the Owen Sound Attack (7-6-0-1) at 7:00pm.
