Six unanswered goals by the Colts lead them to a 7-3 win over the Saginaw Spirit Friday night.

Friday night saw the Barrie Colts visit the Saginaw Spirit for the first and only time this season.  Both teams came into the matchup off a loss in their last game.

In the early goings it was two NHL Drafted goaltenders keeping the game scoreless. In the Barrie net was Vegas Golden Knights 4th round pick, Maksim Zhukov going up against the Spirit’s Ivan Prosvertov who is a 4th round pick by the Arizona Coyotes.

The scoring would get started just past the midway mark of the opening frame as Saginaw’s Cole Coskey put home his 5th goal of the season.

Just over two minutes later Barrie would reply.  Breaking into the zone was Jason Willms who fired a backhand pass in front of the net that was knocked out of the air and into the back of the net by Sam Rhodes for his 4th of the season.  Colts captain Justin Murray added the second assist.

Less than two minutes after that the home team would regain their lead.  A scramble in front caused a group of players falling around the crease and the puck would pop loose to the stick of D.J. Busdeker who finished it off to carry the Saginaw Spirit to a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes of play.

The second period saw action at the beginning and the end.  First it was Saginaw extending their lead to 3-1 thanks to Brady Gilmour who snapped one by Zhukov.

On a Barrie power play at the end of the period, the Colts were able to bring it within one again.  Ben Hawerchuk took a shot from the top of the circle and the rebound popped out in front to Justin Murray who slid home his 4th of the season, cutting the lead to one.  Tyler Tucker added an assist on Barrie’s second goal.

After giving up a 3-1 lead the night before against the Spitfires, the Colts were determined to turn things around like they were done to them a night ago.

In the third period it was five goals by the boys in blue to give Barrie their first lead and to run away with the game.  Just under four minutes in it was Ben Hawerchuk snapping home his 7th goal of the season.  Four and a half minutes later it was more Barrie.  Lucas Chiodo added his 8th goal of the season for their first lead of the game and the eventual game winner.

Later in the period Matej Pekar would add insurance with his 7th goal of the season, followed by Justin Murray a minute and a half later to give Barrie the 6-3 lead.

Jason Willms would wrap one into the net late for his 2nd of the year to finish off the 7-3 win.

Colts net-minder Maksim Zhukov made 33 saves in the victory.

The Colts are back in action Sunday afternoon to finish up this weeks road trip in Flint against the winless Firebirds club.  Puck drops at 2pm.
